The game in short

Base wager
$5 a hole by default. Never resets, not even at the turn. Only a press moves it, and only up.
$5$10$20$40$80$160$320
Presses
Only the team down on collected money. One per nine each, plus one bonus press per round if you're down $100 or more heading into game hole 16, 17 or 18. A press doubles the base for the rest of the round.
Crack and re-crack
Team teeing second may crack after the first team tees off, doubling the hole. The cracked team may re-crack after the second team tees off, doubling it again. Two cracks a hole maximum.
Tee order
Hole 1 goes to the tee flip. After that the team up on money tees first, and keeps the honors until the other side goes strictly ahead. The app works this out for you.
Birdies and eagles
Winning a hole with a gross birdie doubles the payout for that hole only. Gross eagles triples it! Winner is decided by net best ball. After doubling or tripling due to a gross birdie or eagle, any carry-over pot is added on top of that. The carry-over pot is not part of the doubling or tripling formula.
Carryover
Halve a hole and its value goes to the pot, with no multiplier. Win the next one and you collect that hole plus the whole pot.

Base wager

The default starting base is $5 per hole and it is set at setup. The base persists hole to hole and never resets, including at the turn. It only ever goes up, and only through a press.

Presses

A press doubles the base for the remainder of the round.

  • Only the team that is down money may press.
  • Down money is measured on collected money only. A pending carryover pot belongs to neither team and does not count.
  • Each team gets one press per nine, front and back.
  • Each team gets one bonus press per round if they are down $100 or more heading into game hole 16, 17 or 18.
  • A press must be declared before that team tees off on the hole, and takes effect starting with that hole.

That allows six presses in a standard round, three per team.

1$10
2$20
3$40

5$160

Presses are not hard capped. Groups grant each other extra presses by agreement, so the app allows it and just notes that the group may be composed of degenerates.

Cracks and re-cracks

Cracks apply to the current hole only. They do not carry forward and they do not change the base.

  1. The team teeing first hits their tee shots.
  2. The team teeing second may then call "Crack," doubling the value of that hole.
  3. The second team hits their tee shots.
  4. The team that was cracked may then call "Re-Crack," doubling the hole value again.

Hard cap of two cracks per hole, one per team. A $5 hole cracked and re-cracked is worth $20 for that hole while the base stays at $5.

Cracks are tee shots only. The window closes once tee shots are complete. A team cannot crack after a bad approach shot.

There is no judgment test. The spirit of the crack is to punish a bad tee shot, but the right to crack is unconditional. The team teeing second may crack every hole if they want to, and the cracked team may always re-crack. Because the team that is up money tees first, in practice the crack belongs to the team that is down.

Tee order

Tee order matters because the team teeing first is the team that can be cracked. Hole 1 is decided by a tee flip at setup. After that the team that is up money tees first. A team that is up money and returns to all square continues to tee first. Tee order only changes when the other team goes strictly ahead on collected money.

Birdies and eagles

Multipliers attach only to the team that wins the hole, and are based on that team's best gross score. A gross birdie doubles the hole value, a gross eagle triples it. Net birdies do not multiply. A net eagle achieved through a gross birdie multiplies by 2, not 3, because the multiplier reads gross.

The winner of the hole is determined by net best ball. The multiplier is determined by the winning team's best gross score. Multipliers stack with cracks, so a $5 hole cracked to $10 and won with a gross eagle pays $30.

Carryover, or no blood

  • A halved hole goes to the carryover pot and nobody wins it.
  • Multipliers do not apply to a halved hole. Only the cracked base value carries.
  • The base does not change as a result of a halve.
  • The pot is a fixed dollar amount. Later cracks and presses do not multiply it.
  • When a team wins a hole they collect that hole's value plus the entire pot, and the pot resets to zero.

Hole calculation order

  1. Hole value starts at the current base, already reflecting any presses in effect.
  2. Apply the crack multiplier, x2 if cracked, x4 if cracked and re-cracked.
  3. Determine the winning team by net best ball.
  4. If halved, the hole value goes to the pot. No payout and no multiplier.
  5. If won, apply the winning team's gross multiplier, x2 for a gross birdie or x3 for a gross eagle.
  6. Payout is the hole value plus the carryover pot, then the pot resets to zero.

Handicaps and strokes

Manual entry, no course database and no handicap index math. The group plays off the low handicap in the foursome. For each player you enter strokes received for this match, not their index, so a 7 playing against a 3 enters 4. The low man enters 0. Tick the specific holes where each player gets a stroke, and the ticked holes have to equal the strokes entered before the game can start. Stroke holes are tied to course hole numbers, not the game sequence.

Shotgun starts

Two hole numbers run in parallel all round. The course hole is what is on the tee sign and governs stroke holes. The game hole is 1 through 18 from wherever the group started, and governs the front and back press allotment and the bonus press window. A group starting on course hole 7 plays course 7 through 15 as the game's front nine, so game holes 16, 17 and 18 are course holes 4, 5 and 6.

Codes and visibility

There are no accounts. Every game generates a short code at setup, and that code unlocks the full read-only view: hole by hole scores, cracks, presses, amounts won and the running total. The device that set the game up keeps the edit rights. Completed games stay readable with the same code.

Past rounds

Finished games stay readable with the code they were played under. Nobody can edit them, not even the scorekeeper.

Where are you playing?

Pick a course and the app fills in the stroke holes and spots birdies for you. Other works exactly as before, with everything entered by hand.

Set this to the hole you actually tee off on. On a shotgun start the game hole and the course hole run separately all round, and the app tracks both.
